A great lawn comes down to the right grass, the right water, and a little patience. Here’s how to do it in Wichita Falls.
Choosing your grass
For full-sun North Texas lawns, the proven performers are:
- Bermuda — most heat- and drought-tolerant, requires 6+ hours direct sun
- St. Augustine — shade-tolerant, more water needed
- Zoysia — slower to establish but luxurious once filled in
- Buffalo grass — native, low-water, slower-growing
Installing sod
- Prep the soil — till to 4–6 inches, remove debris, level the surface, top with 1” of compost
- Lay tight — fit pieces edge to edge, staggered like brickwork, no gaps
- Water immediately — soak the entire area to about 1” depth
- Roll — a sod roller pressing the sod into soil contact dramatically improves rooting
- Stay off it — no foot traffic, no pets, for at least two weeks
Watering schedule
First two weeks: Water lightly every day to keep the sod constantly moist.
Weeks 3–4: Reduce to every other day, watering longer each time.
Weeks 5+: Once or twice a week, but deeply — encouraging roots to grow down.
Established: 1 inch per week total, including rainfall.
Mowing
Wait until the sod has rooted (you can’t pull it up by hand) and grown to 3–4 inches before the first mow. Never remove more than a third of the blade height at one time.
Fertilizing
Wait six weeks after installation before fertilizing. After that, follow a seasonal program — we sell pre-formulated bags appropriate for Wichita Falls soil.
